Frequently Asked Questions
There are many questions people ask me when they first make contact, here are a few:How can I know that you can deal with my personal problem?
I cannot expect you to believe that I am an experienced 'therapist', only you can be the judge of this for yourself. I have much training and a whole 'life journey' informing my practise so this helps my clients. Why not try a few sessions and see how it feels and then make a choice for yourself? Making your own choice is important and self empowering.
What happens in a session?
The first session is an opportunity for you to tell me your concerns and what it is you are expecting from me. It usually lasts just over an hour. From then onwards sessions are one whole hour, usually at weekly intervals at first and later on, may move to a biweekly time slot after a discussion. It's a talking listening and reflective process, with some spaces for quiet and no demands made.
How long will it take for me, to start to feel more positive?
Most people feel some immediate impact, just to have a person able to truly listen to them. However this is not a deep 'feel good factor', it is superficial, and much more work usually needs to be done. Most people start to have a sense that things are working after a few sessions in, and then starts the real process.
Will people think I'm mentally ill if I tell them I'm seeing a 'therapist'?
Mentally ill people don't usually go to therapists, they see a GP or a Psychiatrist. Most people who suffer 'mental ill health' have had a long history of some debilitation and they need a different kind of support. There is no need to feel any shame about feelings of vulnerability. It simply shows you are of the human race! All of us have intervals in life where and when we feel vulnerable and less able to cope.
I've always been so capable; now I feel as if I'm falling apart?
Most of us can feel at times, overwhelmed by life's challenges. Falling apart; is not always negative. I call this: 'falling into' or being 'opened up to' new and different ways of perceiving one's self and the outer and inner worlds, often for the better. Getting the right kind of support is usually crucial to your wellbeing.
